When we first moved into our home, I knew the entryway had potential—but potential can only get you so far when you’re staring down piles of backpacks, kicked-off shoes, and a rotating cast of coats. What we needed wasn’t just a prettier foyer. We needed a space that greeted us with calm, not clutter. So we turned our attention to something often overlooked: the custom entryway.

With thoughtful mudroom design, the front of our home transformed from a high-traffic chaos zone into a peaceful, polished drop zone—a space that not only sets the tone for the entire house but actually makes coming and going easier.

Here’s how we designed an entryway that’s just as beautiful as it is functional, and the key decisions that made all the difference.

Step 1: Understanding How We Live

Before we made any design decisions, we took a step back and observed how we were actually using the space. Shoes were kicked off near the door. Mail landed on any flat surface. Coats piled onto hooks that weren’t there. It wasn’t just messy—it was stressful.

We didn’t just want entry storage. We wanted a system. So we focused on three essential things:

    • Where everything goes

    • How to make it effortless to maintain

    • How to make it feel cohesive with our modern entryway design

    Step 2: Built-In Storage Was a Game-Changer

One of the best decisions we made was investing in built-in storage. Custom entry cubbies gave every family member their own zone. We added tall vertical lockers with coat hooks inside and cabinets overhead for seasonal items. Below, closed cabinetry hides away everyday mess—hats, gloves, even soccer cleats.

And because this is a family-friendly entry, we thought about durability too. A shiplap wall paneling detail provides texture and interest, while standing up to scuffs. The finishes are simple: matte black hardware, soft oak tones, and a creamy neutral palette that keeps things clean and timeless.

Step 3: The Entry Bench Everyone Fights Over

No organized entryway is complete without a spot to sit. Our entry bench runs the length of the built-in, with drawers beneath for hidden shoe storage. It invites you to pause, take your shoes off, or set down your bag—and somehow, it also became the place where everyone wants to sit, even when we’re not heading out.

The bench adds warmth and softness to the millwork and also keeps the space grounded. It turned out to be the simplest element with the biggest impact.

Step 4: Clean Lines, Thoughtful Materials

Because we were after a minimalist mudroom feel, every material choice was intentional. We chose matte porcelain tile in a herringbone pattern for the floors—it’s classic, durable, and hides dirt beautifully. The lighting is soft and architectural, with a frosted globe sconce above the bench to create a welcoming glow.

We also kept the grout color darker to reduce visual noise and simplify maintenance. The overall effect? A streamlined entry that still feels layered and lived-in.

Step 5: The Little Things That Keep It Tidy

We added small touches that make a big difference—like a narrow shelf with labeled baskets for mail and keys, a mirror to check as we leave, and a tray for packages that need to go out. These are the details that make the entry closet design not just smart, but satisfying.

Everything has a place, which means everything stays in place—no more scrambling on the way out the door.

The Payoff: A Mudroom That Works (and Wows)

This space isn’t just an entryway—it’s a rhythm-reset. It’s the first thing we see when we walk in, and now, it tells a story of calm, order, and ease. Whether it’s a rainy Monday morning or a busy Saturday afternoon, our tidy mudroom absorbs the chaos and gives us back a sense of control.

And design-wise? It does exactly what I love most—blends utility with beauty in a way that feels completely natural. It’s both front entry solution and style statement, all in one.
